Like so many others, I love the Christmas season. Growing up in a big family with three girls and three boys, it was always a time filled with excitement and wonder. I can still remember the joy and thrill of watching my father hanging lights all around the house. And remember the "snow" in a can that we'd spray on the windows? Well, it was the closest thing to a "White Christmas" we'd ever get down on the Bayou Teche in Franklin. But wow, we thought it was great! It's amazing all the Christmas decorations that are already popping up around town. Folks just don't wait until after Thanksgiving anymore! They jump right in there with Santa Claus right after Halloween! The other day as I was going over my scripts in the newsroom, I came across a story that was a pleasant surprise. Can you believe it?... A merchant who actually scoffed at the commercial pressure to put up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving. Kevin Atchley is the manager for the Aneita Furniture Store in Dallas. And he's taking a stand that really puts him in the minority, when it comes to American retailers. He refuses to put up Christmas decorations before the Thanksgiving holiday. Atchley says his store's philosophy is to acknowledge the Thanksgiving season first... and wait until AFTER that holiday to put up Christmas decorations. What a novel idea, huh? But I think it's refreshing. I can't wait to deck the halls either. But Mr. Atchley, I'm with you. No garland, mistletoe, or Christmas lights until after Thanksgiving.
