I hope you enjoyed the Super Bowl here on KPLC. We're sorry the Saints weren't in it, but having two big east coast teams resulted in NBC's coverage being the most-watched Super Bowl in history.
Today I'm going to talk about the big winner. No, not the Giants. I'm talking about Indianapolis. When I was a kid my dad used to travel to Indy on business, and sometimes he'd bring me along. It was dull and gray and ugly. Everybody called it "Naptown" or "Indian-no-place." As late as 1970 native Kurt Vonnegut called it a 500-mile race followed by 364 days of miniature golf.
As you saw on TV, Indianapolis is now officially Naptown no more. It is a vibrant, beautiful and progressive city which has caught the attention of the world. Though one of the NFL's smallest markets, it earned rave reviews and a solid A+ for hosting football's showcase event. Look for another Super Bowl in Indianapolis in the future.
How did this transformation happen? Scroll down for a video in three parts. Everyone in Southwest Louisiana should see it, particularly since we are entering what may be the greatest growth period in our history; a unique opportunity for positive changes.
Southwest Louisiana is a far better place than Indianapolis was. But there are lessons to be learned from Naptown's emergence into America's new Super City that can help us make our own super transformation.
