It seems we keep circling back to some subjects. Perhaps that's because in spite of some strides forward, these are the areas in which our region continues to have gaps.
One major gap is litter and trash. There have been some significant victories in the fight to clean up Southwest Louisiana, but it seems for every step forward by good people there's a step backward by some moron. The recent dumping of a dead horse comes to mind. Just when you think you've seen everything.
So today I'm here to talk to you, because I know that you are the solution to the problem, not the the cause of it. Talking to litterers doesn't work. So it's up to us to take our community back from those who would turn it into a dumping ground.
First of all, be on the lookout for litterers. If you see someone litter, get their license or snap a picture if it's safe to do so. Several parishes have put fines in place for littering and trash dumping and are enforcing those laws. Calcasieu Parish is working on a smart phone app that will soon let you send that info in right away so it can be followed up on.
Second, pitch in to clean up your neighborhood and city, and yes, that means picking up stuff that someone else threw on the ground. It's especially important to do that this week, because the Cleanest City judging takes place this Friday and we in Lake Charles have a shot at winning IF we eliminate everything from cigarette butts to dead horses.
Let's make Lake Charles and surrounding communities the cleanest in the state, this week and throughout the year.
