A series of three multi-vehicle pileups on the I-10 bridge that had the highway backed up for miles in both directions and prompted a heroic medical helicopter landing on the downward slope is a stark reminder of just how dependent we all are on these bridges.
You simply can't get from one end of the metro area to the other without crossing the I-10, 210 or US 171 bridges.
And the problem is going to get a lot worse before it gets any better.
210 will soon be relegated to eastbound traffic only as a long rebuild project gets underway. Thanks to the Port of Lake Charles and the Golden Nugget Casino Resort, we'll be installing a Skycam on top of the Golden Nugget hotel tower so you can keep up with any snarls there. We already have a camera on top of the Isle of Capri with a view of the I-10 bridge.
Next up, hopefully...replacement of the I-10 bridge, and that will be a project of Biblical proportions. The Southwest Louisiana Economic Alliance has just announced its "In For 10" campaign to build support and urgency for a new bridge over the Calcasieu River. Accidents like we just saw underscore the incredible need, especially with an estimated 60-thousand new residents coming to town.
Log onto the "In for 10" page on SWLA Connected or Facebook, or you can go directly to their new website at infor10.org. In the meantime, please exercise extreme caution on all our bridges and roadways.
Moving safely throughout our region means crossing bridges. Bridges up to that challenge are the lifeblood of our Better Southwest Louisiana.
