The Homework Crunch

     School has been back in session for a little over a week.  So by now, your kids are probably settling back into the routine.  But have you noticed how much homework students have lately?  Research was done at the University of Michigan.  And the numbers show a 50 percent increase in the amount of homework between the years 1981 and 1997.  Some say the rise began with "A Nation At Risk," a 1983 report put out by the Department of Education that claimed American school children were falling behind their peers in other countries.  But have things gone overboard when some students as young as eight have two hours worth of homework?  Fears about our children being able to compete in a global community, more focus on trying to get test scores up, and the need to get into the best colleges... all these factors have led to added pressures on our children to achieve.  What do you think?  Do your children get too much homework? Not enough homework?  Or just the right amount?  While there's evidence that homework does improve academic performance, at least in the junior high and high school years, its true value may be more subtle.  It encourages good study habits and acclimates students to self-directed work-- but only when it's not so oppressive that it turns them off school altogether.  What do you think?

Hey guys I had an old laptop running XP Pro. A couple of weeks ago, every time I would connect to the internet via DSL or wireless, the hard drive light would come on - as if it were writing something to the hard drive. It would cause IE to run slower than dial-up. I looked in task manager and although the CPU usage was high, there didn't seem to be a process listed that was using it. I used LavaSoft Adaware to scan on a regular basis as well as Norton 2005. I eventually gave up and bought a new laptop (Vista Home), which now has the same problem. It is obviously related to something that I copied over to the new computer from the old computer. But the things is, Norton Internet security isn't picking up a virus. I used it to scan everything before copying it on to the new computer. Has anyone heard of such a thing or had the same problem? I'd much rather be able to find and remove the problem rather than restore.

It seems to me that a lot of people with visible work put a lot of thought into it before hand.
Recently I discovered a rant on quite a respected figure in the tattoo community's Myspace. I say rant, it was more like pure venomous hatred.
It would seem that some find young people with visible ink, impatient and disrespectful, and they must all just think it's cool to have visible work.
I'm 23, My first tattoo was on my shoulder, then my wrists, then I got a full sleeve. Then I moved to my hands, then neck and I also have a large part of my leg tattooed.
It took me about two years to get the opportunity to get my hand tattooed by my idol, and then my neck by an artist I greatly admire, a lot of time, effort and thought was put into both of these.
Even though I'm somewhat older and do have a fair bit of coverage, I might still be classed as young and "under-tattooed" to have such visible work, and I can't help but think that's kinda crazy!
Sure I've seen some 18 year olds with kanji on their necks or poorly executed skulls on their hands, and you can almost tell they rushed into it, wanting everyone to see their new work as clearly as possible, and fine that to me is impatient and maybe even attention seeking.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that not everyone who has visible work is disrespectful to the art, some people invest a great deal of time, money and effort into getting that particular location inked with the highest standard work possible.
It's kinda funny to find prejudice within a community that tries so hard to divert it away from itself.
