This Sunday marks five years since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, creating a huge humanitarian crisis. We know that mistakes were made in the response, but have those lessons been learned? Current Fema boss, Craig Fugate says the disaster agency would do a better job if there was another Katrina. But one Homeland Security expert still has concerns. And most Americans don't think the government is prepared for another Katrina or other large scale natural disaster. The survey by the Pew Research Center found 57 percent of Americans say the country is no better prepared for a Katrina-like crisis than it was five years ago. What do you think?
get over it already, my gosh..
who care's what happened five years ago..this is whats wrong with people,, they dwell on the past,,,
like i said,, GET OVER IT ALREADY...
what do you want to talk about,, how much the idiots there stayed? how many raped women and young girls, how many people just HAD TO LOOT, how they acted like animals?
Yeap,, that is something I want to remember

I am sick of hearing about Katrina and New Orleans. What about Mississippi ? The only reason New Orleans is still in the news is because of their reaction after the levves broke. Why do we not hear anything about Rita is it because we behaved very differently ? Is there any way KPLC could contact NBC and remind them Katrina affected Mississippi and there was another storm named Rita ? The Rita part you may have to also provide news fottage to them .

"And most Americans don't think the government is prepared for another Katrina or other large scale natural disaster."
The government failed 5 years ago from the top of the Louisiana's governor's hair-do to the Chocolate city's mayor's lack of concern for his chocolatiers. If the same natural disaster happened today, at least Jindal would do a better job than Blanco and one could only hope that Landrieu would listen to Jindal and not his sister....
As far as the other "disaster" that is occurring now, as in our POTUS and his category 5 FU regime.... it's a total loss.

And everybody knows that only ONE hurricane hit the Gulf coast that year, Katrina, and it only hit the poor people in New Orleans.
Or at least that was the best bet the media had for setting up a camera in front of a crowd and getting them the chant and rant against Bush.
Everywhere else they went there weren't anyone standing around chanting: people in the rest of Louisiana, in Mississippi, were busy getting back to life rather than waiting for the mommy state to come rescue them once again.

The government won't be in any better position to react any faster. We saw how fast they can get their "resources" together in the recent oil spill. News crews will get there first.
We saw the feds get in the way of people actually making an effort to fix things.
Bottom line is that if you're depending on the government to rescue you, you're on shaky ground.
You'd best use your own common sense. Look at our local emergency "preparedness" bunch, evacuating the whole are for Gustav, which missed, then letting everybody sit tight for Ike.
Again, use your OWN common sense and take anything that comes from a government spokesman with a grain of salt. Make your own plans, be prepared to take care of yourself and your family, because the government cannot do it.

I agree with tee...don't expect the government to take care of you in a time of need. Take care of yourself. You want food, go find it, you want shelter, go build it. I've learned to pay no attention to "expert advice" to evacuate and I'll rely on my own resourcefulness to survive and protect my property. That attitude built this country 250 years ago and it's still the best policy. There are those who would say that I'm short sighted and reckless but to them I would say that I'm not asking anyone to take care of me, I can do it myself, and you won't see me crying into a camera lense and pleading for the government to "rescue" me.
Are we better prepared after Katrina? Marginally, at best and it certainly won't change what I said in the previous paragraph.

The people of New Orleans are better prepared now. They know all the phone numbers to all the Federal programs that will give them free taxpayer handouts, pay all their bills, and allow them to continue living on the taxpayer dime just as they are doing on a daily basis now. They also know all the charitable organizations that will give them free groceries, clothing, etc. Yep, they have the system down pat and they are ready to milk it for all they can get and the media will support them all the way.

I will neve forget that woman screaming into the camera. "Where is my Gov-ment"? Wel it ran and hid in Dallas Tex. yep your Mayor got himself out. remember that picture of all the City buses sitting in water. nope they were not used for evacuation. All them school buses surrounded by water. nope, not used. How about all of the pre publicity about evacuation. Did they not see it coming. how about the trashing of the super dome. Mayheim....I bet next time they say get out there want be a problem. Just ask the people of Hurricane Audrie and Rita. No sir you dont have to say it twice. News media on a national scale say, " Hurricane Rita? what is that?" Government could have done more i agree. but i ask you, how many country's would have given everyone that evacuated $2000.00 within the same week of Rita. How many governments in this world would have had the Road Home project to help those of us who experience disasters to our homes. I could go on with the help given. my point is I am thankful for my government and there efforts to help me. I still beleive in the Ameerican way and I still have faith I live in the best country in the world. We need improvement I agree. You can't legislate morals, alues. Only God can bring us back and He will......

OK, after RITA we all pulled up our bootstraps and got to work to fix what was broke with our homes, neighborhoods, and town. Are we still crying over spilled milk? Are we still depending on the government to pay our way? Does the government even know who we are? I wonder, how big of a deal will it be for the national news next month, when it is 5 years since Rita?

Bush...he be the one done did it...no doubt bout it...and he ain't fixed nuthin'...it gon' be happen' agin...
Posted by: Bubba | August 27, 2010 at 02:26 PM
Since we got rid of Blanco and the so-called mayor in New Orleans and replaced them with Bobby Jindal our governor and Landrieu is running New Orleans, I can truely say we are MUCH BETTER PREPARED to handle any hurricane that comes our way.

The question is "Are YOU ready for another Katrina or large scale disaster?" The government may be able to help some, but ultimately it is each individual's responsibility to get out before the disaster gets here, and to clean up if it causes any damage - no matter how big or small. We sat in traffic for 10 hours when evacuating for Rita. Did we sit around cussin' the government for not making roads wide enough to accomodate everyone south of I-10 from Houston to New Orleans to head north at exactly the same time? I think not. We used our common sense and kept our car headed in the direction AWAY from the impending disaster. Did we sit around waiting for the insurance company after a tree demolished our carport and the car we had left behind that was under it? No we did not. My 67 year old father and my brother-in-law who had a tree sitting on his roof cranked up chain saws and helped my husband get rid of it. Then cut up the carport and we all helped carry it piece by piece by hand to the curb to be picked up (by the government - by the way). My 7 year old and 10 year old had never worked harder. Maybe the people of New Orleans lived in a state of denial in those government provided FEMA trailers - for how long was it? How many times did the government extend their time in those trailers? I can think of at least three. It is not my intention to just get people really p****d off BUT if they aren't gonna listen, if they just want to do things their way, then they may end up being more than mildly inconvenienced. Maybe they should move to a place that is safer from natural disaster. Although I don't know where that might be - there are earthquakes and wild fires in California, tornadoes and flooding in some of the most unlikely areas of the country, and possible terrorist attacks in who-knows-which-city-could-be-next. I'm so tired of hearing all the whining about New Orleans. I'm not even sure it's the people of the city that are complaining. It may just be some reporter looking to stir the s**t on an otherwise slow news day. In closing, I just have three words: SUCK IT UP!

five years ago another storm hit also named rita.
QUESTION, WHY HAS CAMERON PARSION (CARMERON)NOT METIONED THEY WHERE HIT BY 3 STORMS ALL WHERE CAT 2 AND ABOVE ALL THE ALL TO 4
THE REASON THAT THE NEWS STILL TALKS ABOUT NEEW ORRLEEANS IS BECAUSE THE IDOITS KNEW IF THEY STAY THE GOVERMENT WOULD GIVE THEM BILLIONS OF DOLLARS
THE PEOPLE IN SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA MOSTLY CARMERON PARISH WHOM TOOK A DIRECT HIT STILL NEEDS HELP. WHERE WAS FEMA THEN, WHERE WAS THE GOVERMENT OHH THATS RIGHT THEY WHERE GIVIN/REWARDING CRIMINALS BY GIVING THEM BILLIONS OF DOLLARS
LETS STOPS TALKING ABOUT KATERINA AND TALK ABOUT RITA, IKE,
Posted by: THE PEOPLE | August 27, 2010 at 06:15 PM
We get to look at this topic all weekend while the networks talk about those poor Katrina victims in New Orleans.
How much do you think they'll show people outside New Orleans who climbed out of the wreckage, grabbed their socks and went to work.
Or what I saw when the sun rose after Rita, when three guys, a pickup, a four-wheeler and a chainsaw drove up and started clearing a road. Not government employees, not even contractors, just real Americans making things better for themselves and their neighbors.
You won't see that.
You'll see the Superdome a million times. You'll see the Ninth Ward treated like it was the Taj Mahal before the storm, every citizen a musician or artist, when the truth is that it was a hellhole before the storm.
You'll get to relive the media blaming the Bush government for decades of local corruption in New Orleans where a million bucks on a project meant a new park built from levee funds, and that was built only after the first $750,000 was skimmed off by corrupt government officials in New Orleans.
You'll hear all that. You won't hear about Katrina refugees cashing in on those FEMA debit cards to buy bling in Atlanta and Houston and Dallas.
You won't hear about Mayor Nagin's yard full of school buses under water while he went off on a tirade about getting Greyhounds to come pick up the people who voted him into office.
You won't hear about New Orleans' own published emergency plan, a matter of public record, except that the New Orleans city government completely ignored it.
You won't hear about people who'd been on the dole for generations, so used to the government taking care of everything that they couldn't believe that the government slipped up on Katrina and left them in a flooded city for days.
You won't hear about people breaking into stores and homes to carry out the necessities like consumer electronics and expensive athletic shoes.
But we'll get re-fed plenty of Katrina.
And in a month, when the anniversary of Rita comes up, you won't hear a peep.

Face it..In the realm of oncoming hurricanes.. If you are notified to evacuate and you don't, you have taken the respondibility for your safety..so....what ever happens, has happened, will happen, is of your choosing...
So..stop blaming Bush for your ignorance...

reason that Cameron is not a big talk,, they think it's just hicks there..why talk about a bunch of hicks right?
if it was not for Cameron Parish, no seafood would be worth buying..those people work just as hard as anyone else does.
DON'T FORGET,, WE ARE GETTING A HUGE FERRIS WHEEL..wait til the next major hurricane comes through..it will be torn down just like the rest of this town and never put up again..they are only going to do it just to see HOW MUCH MONEY IT BRINGS, and once it is destroyed by a hurricane or bad weather, and if no money had came in...down it goes.
I'm glad new orleans went through this.. nothing special there...
plus if the city of new orleans would build BETTER LEVEES, then it would have never have happened...man it takes a genius to come up with this...

The truth is that most of the area's homes that not have been repaired or rebuilt did not belong to the people who lived there. When the homes were destroyed the owner's took the money put it in their pockets and most likely won't rebuild. The Mayor of New Orleans at the time said we welcome you back to your home but if you don't want to work stay where you are. Most of us know what he meant by that.

Well now, I am just so proud of all you true americans who"TIGHTENED YOUR BOOT STRAPS AND GOT RIGHT TO WORK", and those "TOOK RESPONSIBILITY" and "DID THE RIGHT THING" and all that good stuff.
WHOOPDEE DOO
ME? I got to be lazy and play the xbox all day and just waited for my $62,000 dollars from road home, and paid someone 200 bucks to clean my yard.
HAH...Never even broke a sweat. So who's the dummy now?
Makes me wonder..all them people that you saw on the news in Narluns...Were they just trash waitin for a handout, or where they genuises on a well planned mission?
Posted by: HA HA | August 28, 2010 at 01:47 PM
Just sayin...the money was there, and was being offered. Someone was going to get it regardless. If you didn't take the offer, it was on you

I am so tired of hearing only about New Orleans with Katrina when Mississippi coast was wiped out. what about them. Also what about SW Louisiana and SE Texas with Hurricane Rita you did not see a bunch of trash robbing stores and stealing plasma tv's. they all worked together and dealt with their loss without whining for someone to come and do it for them. i feel for those who lost in both storms but at some point you have to help yourself and stop relying on government to bail you out.

Do you think KPLC is going to make as big a deal about the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Rita?
