Moratorium Impact

U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, the chair of the U.S. Senate Small Business Committee, held a field meeting in Lafayette on Tuesday about the federal moratorium on deepwater drilling's impact on small businesses in Louisiana.

Landrieu's fellow Louisiana Senator David Vitter, co-chaired the hearing.

The senators heard testimony from small business owners and local politicians about the economic impact the moratorium was having on their businesses and communities along Louisiana's coast.

Only about the same impact on the jobs in this area when Texas opens up gambling, or if PPG,Conoco, Citgo, Firestone, and others were to have a moratorium inflicted upon them.....
Yet another "F"iasco put down onto the state of Louisiana by the puppet-led POTUS. A three-year-old federal law that makes it a crime to falsely claim to have received a medal from the U.S. military is unconstitutional, an appeals court panel in California ruled Tuesday.

The decision involves the case of Xavier Alvarez of Pomona, Calif., a water district board member who said at a public meeting in 2007 that he was a retired Marine who received the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration.

Alvarez was indicted in 2007. He pleaded guilty on condition that he be allowed to appeal on First Amendment grounds. He was sentenced under the Stolen Valor Act to more than 400 hours of community service at a veterans hospital and fined $5,000.

A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with him in a 2-1 decision Tuesday, agreeing that the law was a violation of his free-speech rights. The majority said there's no evidence that such lies harm anybody, and there's no compelling reason for the government to ban such lies.

The dissenting justice insisted that the majority refused to follow clear Supreme Court precedent that false statements of fact are not entitled to First Amendment protection.

The drilling ban will have a substantial impact on Louisiana jobs. It doesn't take much intelligence to figure that one out. HOW MUCH of an impact is open to discussion. These meetings are only political posturing to garner support for upcoming elections. There really aren't any new decisions that need to be made. There are already plenty of safety precautions in place and we don't need any more laws. Just enforce what we already have. As for the Obozo administrations position on the ban, I can only say that it'll be my turn in November.
