It was just over a month ago that a McNeese student was killed when she was hit by a vehicle while she was walking to class. And now there's been another accident involving a McNeese student. This time a student on a bicycle was struck by a car Tuesday afternoon. The student was using a crosswalk on Common Street near Gayle Street, when he was struck. McNeese police say the student did not appear to be seriously injured, but was taken to the hospital for an evaluation. The driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The accident happened just about a week after the speed limit was lowered on that section of Common. What's your reaction to another student being hit?
I'm sorry but i really don't care

I'm not in the least bit surprised. Put up some real crosswalk lights, the kind that actually stops all traffic, and then maybe we will see this come to an end.

I've seen students hit the crosswalk lights on Ryan street then start crossing the street not giving drivers a chance to stop. On Monday I saw a student do this and almost get hit. The students have to be watchful as well as drivers.

Ok since this is the second accident within 2 months..obviously its the drivers. Stop judging the students, we know how to walk across a street...well most of us do.

The story is kind of vague on some points, but based on what I heard I don't think the driver of the car should have been ticketed in this situation, and here's why. A person on a bicycle isn't considered a pedestrian, they are a vehicle and therefore have no business using a crosswalk, unless, of course, the person dismounted the bike to walk across the street. If you are going to ride a bike, you should observe all traffic laws yourself which includes not riding in a crosswalk. Bicycles move much faster than pedestrians and can appear in front of a car in the blink of an eye. This leaves no time to react for even the most aware of drivers.

I am not surprised in the least. I saw two students almost get run over yesterday when they were using the crosswalks the correct way. In addition the last two days I have had drivers speed pass me while I was driving the new speed limit. I agree there are students who jaywalk and don't use the crosswalks correctly BUT drivers are paying close enough attention either. EVERYONE should be more diligent not just around McNeese but all school areas. The problem is just more pronounced around McNeese because there are more people walking. Everyone needs to stop trying to blame each other and just be careful and much more observant.
As far as this student who was hit in the crosswalk he was doing what he was suppose to be doing and the driver wasn't paying close enough attention. Him being on a bike crossing in the crosswalk has no bearing on the situation.

meant to say "drivers are NOT paying close attention either"

A sure fire way to prevent students from being hit by vehicles is to take the students off of the street.
Can you say, "SKY BRIDGES"? If McNeese and the city would team up together and find some grant money and build four sky bridges over Ryan St and McNeese St and force the students to use them, we would not hear of any more accidents concerning the students.

I think you are all going about this in the wrong manner.
What we need to do is ban cars, yup make everyone ride a bike or walk in the whole damn city. This way we save money on gas, we get in shape, the cops get in shape because they have to walk or run after crooks, no more car accidents so our students stay safe, no car insurance another money saver, the only vehicles allowed I think would be fire trucks and ambulance. Problem solved DA GARDNER FOR MAYOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the solution:
Make getting to school at McNeese a sport.
In a few days there will be millions of
dollars earmarked, a battalion of coaches hired, and piles of scholarships that never see graduation.
We could have "tailgate parties" every day.

I am waiting to here what "DA GARDENER" has to say about this one. His mealy mouthing about Pastors and Churchs really shows how ignorant He is about God's people. Hyprocritical on his part. Living on Government pay outs and who knows what else. But, the first to point out and judge. Com on MAN!!! Let's hear some more of your wisdom. What do you think about McNeese students?

Big Bubba- It is obvious you do nto read the post on this blog or you would have seen my comments already. As for mealy mouthed I do not think you know what that word means exactly.
meal·y-mouthed
/ˈmiliˌmaʊθt, -ˌmaʊðd/ Show Spelled[mee-lee-moutht, -mouthd] Show IPA
–adjective
avoiding the use of direct and plain language, as from timidity, excessive delicacy, or hypocrisy; inclined to mince words; insincere, devious, or compromising.
My point was that there are allot of religious people around this town who claim to be better then you and me because they can quote scripture or because they go to church more than once a week, these self proclaimed pastors and do gooders are hypocrites or those bus people would have been 1. taken to their homes or churches, 2. been feed hot meals 3. a collection would have been taken and with all the churches in LC they would have had the money in 1 day to fix the bus 4. a bus would have been provided to them.
Now a bus was provided but not from a church, but from a business. Now I believe WE are ALL Gods people, but you do not have to go to a church to be Gods people. As for government pay outs it's open to everyone even you, why work when the great obama will pay me to stay at home.

Mr. Gump, could we add ice and mud to the street crossing sporting event, and maybe jello for the finals....
Posted by: Da Gardner | November 17, 2010 at 09:52 AM
Why are people surprised??
Posted by: bb | November 17, 2010 at 10:01 AM
I drove past there on my way to and from the airport last week, I saw people j walking (running) accross the street and people were having to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting them. On the way back a girl ran out in front of me and I almost hit her. And I saw a guy ride a bike accross the street and he almost caused an accedent. A pedestrian bridge or a $1,000 fine for j walking are the only two options.

Move McMoo downtown where there is NO TRAFFIC , you people are so " Small Town "
you need to have a Black student run over , then you know , Jesse and the Posse will intervene and everyone will live happily in racial harmony forever more. FIXED

The definition da gardnenr gives certainly suits him to a tee. figured he would not have a clue to the question.

The recent accident doesn't surprise me at all. I live in the area and drive through the intersection of McNeese and Common street at least twice a day. The problem is a combination of inattentive and impatient students as well as drivers. The only way to avoid the problem is to separate the students and the drivers. Elevated pedestrian crosswalks are a way to accomplish this. Then the problem will be impatient students who don't want to take the time to climb the elevated crosswalks. Sounds like a no-win situation. Students have dodged drivers for over 50 years so why stop now? I kind of like GUMP's idea...make it a sport!!
Posted by: Mike | November 17, 2010 at 11:33 AM
Its obvious that we need more laws, so the Mcneese cops can give more tickets.
Posted by: Steve | November 17, 2010 at 11:44 AM
These kids will not take the time to use a sky bridge. That would be a huge waste of money. They are apparently in a hurry and to hell with the vehicles on the street. Two days after the student was killed I drove down McNeese and had to CRAWL at 5 miles per hour because of the students running across the street no where near the crosswalks and a bicycle weaving in and out of the moving cars.

Goody Two Shoes- My guess would be they are both Right shoes. I did understand and provide a viable solution. Perhaps you are afraid of getting in shape or riding a bike. Come on man, if we all rode bikes then no one gets run over by car..Plain and simply even for the small minded out there. SO if the SHOE fits then wear it.

I think that Mcneese needs to buy the old millers sports building and build a parking lot there for all students then build a sky walk that connects to the other side of the road. i mean there are students that get out of school after dark and have to walk to there cars how safe is that along with everything else. Not only do they have to walk across the street once but twice. Bc no matter what u do students along with drivers are still gonna hve problems.

A pedestrian bridge over the street? Are you kidding? If they are too lazy to walk to a crosswalk and cross there do you think they would actually CLIMB up stairs to cross? Maybe if you installed elevators.
