The whole world is watching the two Koreas. South Korea is pledging to respond with force after Tuesday's attack by North Korea. The two countries exchanged artillery fire along their disputed border. South Korea says two of its marines were killed, and that there could be a lot of North Korean casualties. North Korea was angered over the South's refusal to stop military drills near their sea border, and then launched a deadly artillery attack on a South Korean Island. President Barack Obama says the U.S. will stand by its commitment to defend South Korea. But the president would not speculate on actual military action. To what extent, do you believe, the U.S. should get involved in the tensions between North and South Korea?
I don't believe North Korea is afraid of Obama and his threats. They have been hollow in the past. We should have stopped the nuclear threat isssue years ago, but we were not aggressive, waiting until it becomes a national disaster.

We need to stay out of this situation. We already are helping Iraq rebuild, nobody would help us we would be on our own if it was us. We are already in debt over our heads as a nation.

China holds all the cards, do they keep there vicious little dog on a leash, or do we have to put him down?
Hitler knew he could get away with a little, then turned it into a lot.
I dont trust any of them
and lest we forget........china owns the uas in the form of a mortgage, payable on demand, arm twisting or smiling brightly.

Good move to move the Battle Group to S.Korea BUT it will be an empty gesture if N.Korea ups the ante and the US does not respond forcefully enough. Obama has been high on symbolic gestures BUT does he have the "will" to actually order anything more than that? US has often used carrier battle groups to "signal" US "resolve" but has rarely used that military power. That kind of message to N.Korea is a meaningless gesture unless they "believe" we will use that power.
does anyone know if the prez can BOW on the bow? another empty suit,.........all flash no stones

Unfortunately, we have been intimately involved with South Korea ever since the stalemate was established during the Korean War. South Korea is now our red-haired stepchild, for better or worse. South Korea cannot defend herself against the North. Geographically speaking, South Korea is at the end of a spit of land with North Korea controlling the upper end of the spit. China is on the northern border of North Korea and can send troops straight through North Korea to attack the south(which they did during the Korean War). It's a ticklish situation and China may feel "threatened" if South Korea (backed by the United States) attacks North Korea. It's a no-win situation for us and our best bet would be to get out of South Korea but I don't know how we can do it without losing face. President Teddy Roosevelt said "Walk softly but carry a big stick". We've got the stick but I don't think we'll use it. North Korea and China will stare us down and we'll gradually go back to business as usual.

I believe the question was: Should we get involved?
We have 28500 troops in South Korea and 47000 troops in Japan.
WE'RE INVOLVED.
Posted by: GUMP | November 24, 2010 at 11:10 AM
we've been involved since the 50's, only thing is that this national debt has us so low o the list of allies {not paying bills and such} that nobody will back us. that being said,...china is holding the DEED to the usa and obama and his policies caused{with democRATS] this very poor credit rating. obama OWES our personell over yonder safe passage to safer places,......that's what we pay{to much} him for

Gee, I thought that Bill 'n' Hillary went over there and talked to the Norks so they could see we were nice people and that was going to stop all this stuff.
I guess if our best and brightest such as Monica's boyfriend and his wife can't fix this, we're just left without hope.

It's a no win situation for the USA. We could get heavily involved but the problem is our national debt....China holds all the paper.
If we get in the middle of this China could call our debt, if they do we can't pay meaning China owns the US.
Bad deal for everyone but we need to stay neutral.
Posted by: Mom | November 25, 2010 at 03:27 AM
The United States cannot choose to stay "neutral" because our country is already committed to South Korea....and has been for quite some time. That being said, Don't be surprised if North Korea pulls yet another of it's antics of wantting more ...get this...MONEY!! Follow the money, and you'll now be lead to China. If North Korea gets the money it wants, things will be "more" peaceful .... til next time.

`Im always amused at the arm chair wanna be's in American Policy,For all you wanna be policy makers, China comes in 4th place as to who owns the U.S. National Debt,Japan is third and second is publicly held USA and the no.1 is US government intragovernmental debt.(http://www.optimist123.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2007/04/09/piechart200701.gif) So what if China calls in our paper if we dont want to pay them what are they going to do.It would be like you telling the government to pay you money they owe you and the us government saying no .I say stay out of South Koreas business,if North Korea happens to harms any of our troops make them sorry. Its in Chinas best interest (financially )to keep their dog on a leash.By the way, wanna be's our debt to china started long before Obama came to office.
Posted by: for the record | November 27, 2010 at 01:33 PM
for the record....it is very naive of you to believe that the US Treasury could default on its debt and get away with it...it is also very naive to believe that China would want to all of the sudden remove the US$ from its foreign currency reserves.(as if it sold its Treasury notes and bonds , it may want to dump $ and buy other assets..commodities or gold perhaps?)
As for China wanting stability in N.Korea, you are right, but probably more for strategic reasons than financial ones....
Anyway , the days of USA ruling Asia are fast closing...
