Speed limit signs have been changed on two streets around the McNeese campus. The limit was reduced on Sale Road and Common Street from 35mph to 25mph near the campus. Thursday, McNeese Police was already enforcing the new speed limits. So far, they are only giving out warnings, but say that will change.
The speed limit was changed following the recent death of a McNeese student killed as she walked to class.
What do you think of this change, and should more be done to ensure student safety?
The speed limit could be 5 mph it would not help. The kids push the button and do not look both ways, they just assume cars can stop on a dime. I cringe everytime I see them walk without looking.

This will not help!! Has anyone else noticed how many people speed thru a regular school zone?

I was in the area yesterday and someone in a Dodge 4x4 (tan in color, older body style extended cab truck) was northbound stopped at the light on Common Street and had to wait for students to cross before he could make his right turn onto McNeese St and when they made it across, he hit the gas, squealing his tires. So it's not only the students crossing that don't pay attention, it's also people that have no sense behind the wheel that they've got to watch for!

It makes no sense to reduce the speed limit on Common and Sale, but not on McNeese Street where the girl got it. That is the busiest road these students have to cross.

You'd think that college students would be smart enough to deal with crossing streets, but never mind... these children are the future of our (nanny state) country. Let's coddle them.

nothing will change. cops will give out tickets for a few weeks or months then winter break come spring semester back to speeding and jay walking. People just don’t care. The drivers think they have the right away and the pedestrians think they have the right away. Most the time you have someone cross the street and they just walk talking on the phone in no hurry at all. You can see why a driver would get agravated. They don’t wave and say thank you for stopping an letting me cross. And most drivers are just as rude. Honking their horn speeding away after someone crosses. It will change some but they can’t give everyone a ticket. It’s sad but either someone will get hit again or you will see someone on the news that has a bad case of road rage

Don't use the streets that have lowered speeds and don't patronize any businesses on those streets. When business owners feel the pinch in their pocketbooks maybe they will pressure the city to return to a normal speed rather than enforcing a slow speed for students who are too lazy to cross safely.

If you can't cross a street you shouldn't be attending post-secondary education. You should go back to pre-school and learn how to properly cross the road. Maybe we should put crossing guards out there too?! YES! That is the answer!!! But make sure these crossing guards aren't also attending college, they might just aid in getting run over. Idiots.

The speed limit around McNeese, is now lower for a longer period of time than around our elementary schools. Man what a kick in the butt for the McNeese babies. Next will be school crossing guards at the day care center. If the McNeese Police Dept. would have enforced the jay-walking law from the beginning, maybe this situation would not be happening now!

Lowing the speed limit will not help with accidents, it's just another tool for the McNeese Police to harass the students and taxpayers of this City. Also, how is it that it's alright for University Animals Clinic owners and employees to park in the same parking lot as McNeese students and they can jaywalk and the others can't. I think this might be a legal issue for the University. They should not be allowed to jay walk either. They need to follow the law too!

Absolute stupidity....if you are killed by a car that is was going 35 mph or one that was going 25 mph....guess what!!!! You are still dead!!!!
The speed limit is not the problem...its the students not obeying the law and the Magnesium police not enforcing said law....

It's a shame McNeese isn't located downtown, then they would build beautiful lighted sky bridges, lined with awesome Palms trees on both sides and topped with Bronze Flying Geese.
Oh well, maybe we should move the campus to the lake front. Or maybe the answer is just let the McNeese Police(Barney Fife's) tazer all jaywalkers and shoot out all tires on cars going more than 25mph.

I think the problem lies with inattentive, belligerent drivers and irresponsible students. Lowering the speed limit will not have any effect on either. This is just a knee-jerk reaction to the problem. The decision was made to do something quickly and at low cost just to pacify the public. Job accomplished!! I notice that the city already has installed push-button crossing lights at the intersection of Common and School (only a few blocks away)so they're familiar with the concept. I don't expect the city or the university to spend too much money on this problem.

There is no fix for this problem that will bring back that beautiful young girl back, that had her entire life ahead of her. It's sad and it's also a fact that they don't won't to spend more than necessary to hush everyone up.
Bless that young girl and her family and quit trying to lay the blame on someone. Everyone needs to be cautious around all schools regardless of where they are located.

Isn't it wonderfull. We got missle's flying over our country while the president gallivant's on the other side of the world, and the best thing we can worry about is the speed limit at Mc Neese! Drop the speed limit to 1mph and offer mixed drinks to the cars as they drive up and down the street and nobody will complain. Maybe place a few hookers on the streets for the older crowd who feels the only way they can be a man is to get drunk and have sex with loose women. I don't know why KPLC expects Lake Charles to get better when they keep trying to lower their moral standards to that of New Orleans.

Just a question? What authority does the Ryan Street High police force have that says they can give me a jaywalking ticket if i am not a student? What about me speeding thru their precious school zone? Can the mcneese cops get me for that? Are the equal to real policeman, or are they a bunch of rent a cops?
Posted by: HA HA | November 12, 2010 at 06:49 PM
Morals, If it is good for Whoremonger Vitter it is good for the MCNeese student body. And the voters approved Vitter's lifestyle. As for the Pres. being out of the country:I thought that was what all the Tea party genious's wanted. All I have heard for 2 years is to get him out of the country, Have no fear though Vitter/Boustany and the fake moraled republicans are going to fix everything. If you don't believe it just ask one of them.
Posted by: Eyes Wide Open | November 12, 2010 at 06:59 PM
I do not believe that the reduced speed limits will help. Law enforcement here isn't proactive about anything else, why would it be different about speed zones? I think that it would save lives, confusion, and the hassle if they would put in a sky walk of some sort. just a small pedestrian bridge that goes over mcneese street into the parking lot of the stadium. I know it would cost money, but what is more important here?!?!?! We as a state and a country waste money everyday on things that we don't NEED so why not spend a little on something that would help everyone out?
