Is it a natural phenomenon? Here we go again with more dead birds falling from the sky. Remember around the new year when the first reports of dead birds starting coming in from several states, including here in Louisiana? Well now, hundreds more dead birds were discovered this time in South Lake Charles. Thursday morning, more than 100 birds were found scattered across Lake Street, and about 100 more were found on Lincoln Road. Wildlife and Fisheries identified the birds as "tree swallows"... which are known to travel together in tight flocks. And while they don't know for sure, they say the birds were likely flying around erratically and some of them may have been struck by passing vehicles. Medical examinations are being conducted to find out just what killed the birds. Those results should be in, in a few weeks. In the meantime, are you concerned about the continuing mystery of the dead birds?
Who knows; it could be a sign of the "END OF TIME" as we know it. The Myan calender says the world will end in 2012 which is, count it, one (1) year and eleven (11) months away. December 23, 2012 to be exact.
God said he will come for his choosen before the end.

Mass suicide , like the Lemming , too many tree swallows and not enough Omama Welfare to feed them. I heard they were not carrying Green Cards or Passports " Illegal Swallows " , do they have a lawyer ? Were they struck by battery or gas / diesel driven cars - This story is troubling !

Hey Joe, the Mayan calendar does not say the world will end in 2012. Quite simply, the Mayan calendar doesn't go any further than Dec. 2012. Maybe it's because they got tired of chisling the calendar out of some stone. Old calendar maker probably just got tired and said, "Well that should be long enough"

I PERSONALLY THINK ITS SOMETHING MORE THAN BIRDS GETTING HITTING BY CARS R THE BIRDS FLYING INTO THE CARS. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IT WAS BLAMED ON THE FIREWORKS AND STRESS TO THE BIRDS. WELL WE HAVE HAD NOTHING WITH FIREWORKS LATELY. SO THERE HAS TO BE SOME REAL REASON WHY THESE BIRDS ARE JUST FLYING FROM THE SKY? WEATHER? CLIMATE? SOMETHING IF GOING ON AND I'M PERSONALLY GLAD THAT THERE IS SOMETHING BEING DONE ABOUT IT AND ITS JUST NOT BE OVERLOOKED. ALL EVERYBODY DOES ON HERE IS COMPLAINED AT LEAST THERE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!

The idea that the birds are being hit by cars or are startled by fireworks is totally bogus. These birds fly "irratically" on purpose and it's not a sign of distress. Anyone who has watched swallows knows that. The fact that several different species of birds (swallows, starlings and red-wing blackbirds) are involved tells me that the problem is not species dependent and is probably environmental. I can't think of any reason why apparently healthy birds all die at the same instant and fall together. It'll be interesting to see if anything comes from the necropsies. No, I'm not concerned...but I AM very curious.

It's not the end of the world , people take these kind of things to far. its a normal thing ,it happens almost every year. it just that most times it happens in places where the birds can't be found... people need to stop taking thing like this as the end of the world ..

Come on people. These birds are along the roads. They are not being found in great numbers away from the road. It is the same phenomenon that causes all run over and flattened cats and dogs are only found near roads. Dead birds are along the road because that is also where you will find cars, vans and trucks. If it were weather related or environmental, we would have dead birds all over the parish not just along heavily travel roads

Look at kplcviewernet photo to see hundreds of birds keeping warm on Lincoln Road and playing "chicken" with 5,000 lb vehicles. What do you suppose the result of that encounter would be? (My thoughts -- hundreds of dead birds.)

Maybe we could get the Lake Charles Police to stop the jay-walking birds on the street, like they did around McNeese. The city could even put up some elementary school speed signs too.
