It's been in the works for nearly two years. Now the City of Lake Charles has outright ownership of the old Harrah's property. But what to do with the four acres? That's the question before the city council as they consider the property's long term development potential. Now that the city has official ownership of the property, they have 180 days to decide whether to lease, sell, or demolish the structures on the property. If they decide to tear it down within the six months, Pinnacle will tear it down with no cost to the city. What do you hope to see the city do with the old Harrah's property?
One can hope anything....the proof of fiscal responsability is now in the City's hand...lets see if they can reedeem their past incompetency....I say locate the Hurricanne Museum there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets see, almost a mile of waterfront, on I-10 where Thousands of travelers pass daily, yes PASS UP, What to see, a 1940 style Boat House, abandoned Park garage & Hotel, This has been our city progress over the years ? I do not think this Administration has the Brains to figure out what to do. This property is not CITY owned, the CITY is the Tax Paying People who live here, get their Ideas!

Turn the facility into a Culture Center for Lake Charles. It would contain, among others, a welcome center for visitors with literature for all things to do and eat in LC, Children's museum with railroad display and wetland area for children, Calcasieu imperial museum, Mardi Gras museum, USS Orlick museum and information center, wetland center, with wetland in back of facility, and restaurant. This would be a better facility than what it was before and a great asset to the city.

Some sort of train trolley from the garage, along the lake front, to the Civic Center would be an added attraction. ?

A hurricane museum. So when the next one comes we can save the debris that ends up inside of it and it will already be on display. Wash out the old display and insert the new display. Awesome!

I would love to see a museum and Kemah stylr board walk. Anything to draw travelers off the interstate and into our area.

Just keep it out of Roach's hands he will study it to death and we will have nothing. It is a eyesore, tear the pink elephant down we have looked at it long enough.

First thing we have to address is the storm surge problem. The last two storms all the boats were on the railroad tracks and Harrah's was underwater. Question would you build there. It's a BEACH after a storm when you come back it's still a beach. Let's make it a better Beach for our Families to enjoy.

Tear them both down. Build a family oriented theme park. Maybe a salt water aquarium with a La. wetlands exhibit type zoo. Moody Gardens type arrangement comes to mind. Museums are boring. Liberty music hall in Eunice type struture would be nice. Something that promotes our SW Cajun heritage. A six flags type park would be nice.I could keep going but no one listens to me.

Burn it to the ground, collect the insurance. Sell what's left to the taxpayers of cal. Parish. Then pass a law barring any noncorporate entities from owning land there, confiscate it, then sell it to a willing corporation for some crazy inflated price and demand they build something family oriented there, but don't stay on their butts about it so that 5 years from now there will still be nothing there.... Hey, it's what this city is best at.

How long will the city sit on it's hands trying to decide what to do with this? Far too long I'm sure. Something should be built to pull people off the interstate but it will never happen. We had a perfectly good hotel but then they sold all the stuff out of it, we had a perfectly good garage but didn't want to use it, what's next?
Go LC, that's why I drive to Lafayette or Beaumont!

"Just keep it out of Roach's hands he will study it to death and we will have nothing."
+1, sir and kudos.
Unfortunately, short of forcing a recall election on the idiot, Mayor Randy is going to hire the best team of consultants $100,000 can buy. Then he will build a museum dedicated to palm trees and his Revolutionary War ancestor.

That being said, overall I think Randy is doing a great job and I look forward to his future leadership.

I agree with down but not out there needs to be some attractions and something for us to do with our young people along the Lake Front. Something besides gambling. We visit Galveston several times a year and spend outside our parish / city because there is something to do there besides walk along the water and look at palm trees and feed the birds.

So again, why would anyone want to build anything there just have another storm surge wash it away? Why have so many totally ignored this question and inevitable fate?
Posted by: bill | April 13, 2011 at 10:05 AM
I really like Jock Martins idea, but Bill is absolutely correct. Unless we invest in storm surge protection all efforts will be washed away. Now lets look at another possibility. Yup I am going there once again.... A TRUCK STOP... There I said it. Hey a truck stop is mostly pavement storm surge would just give it a good cleaning. I mean we could still have the museums and wetlands and stuff for family's but why not put in something that will also make us money.. We could lease a portion of the property to a truck stop as well as charge them a percentage of the revenue they make from gasoline sales, this way if they screw us like the rest of the gas stations at least we will get a rebate of sorts.
After all we will have to pay to keep these museums and wetlands open.
THINK about it my people. It is a doable and profitable suggestion, and more then the current mayor (who needs to go) has suggested. Heck he has been sitting on this for how long with still no solutions....

WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOMETHING FOR THE FAMILY. BUT WE ALSO STILL NEED A CONVENTION HOTEL. MAKE IT LOOK NICE TO DRIVER PASSING THROUGH LAKE CHARLES, TO WHERE THEY STOP AND WANT TO SPEND MONEY IN THE CITY. A THEME PARK USING THE WATER.

....GOOD IDEAS...THEREFORE NONE WILL BE CHOSEN....
THE CITY IS GOING TO SELL IT FOR A SONG AND DANCE TO THE USUAL LOCAL INVESTORS WHO WILL FLIP IT OVER AT A GREAT PROFIT TO SOMEONE ELSE..........................

priority 1 get the hurricane museum

I agree with the people that is wanting some type of theme park or nice water park like sulphur that my kids love but we dont go that often because gas is high and I hate the fact that lake charles residents have to pay 5 dollars to enter plus what you want to eat and drink that is also high. A nice big water park like other places that when u enter the city there is a water park near the water and it just makes u want to go even if u are in that town for a meeting. Oh and if a homeless person tries to burn that down, lets put good insurence so we wont need donations, an it will be like putting out a match with all the water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A WATER PARK AND/OR A THEME PARK WOULD BE NICE FOR THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS FOR OUR VISITORS FROM OUT OF TOWN! THERE'S NOT TOO MUCH FOR ANYONE TO ENJOY HERE- BESIDES THE CASINOS THAT ARE NOT FAMILY ORIENTED!
