Let's face it. When you've lossed twice as many games as you've won at the All-Star Break, it's time to fold up the tent. I'm not saying to give up, just time to cut your losses. Time to get rid of the dead wood that's not part of future.
Case in point, Brett Myers. He hasn't been the stopper that the Astros lost when they jettisoned Roy Oswalt. It's not even close! Myers could, however, be the missing link 4th starter on a title contender (insert the usual suspects, Yankees, Red Sox, etc.). Carlos Lee should be next on the list. At 35, he still can draw trade-suitors, but is not compatible with the Houston re-building plan.
The Astros did send oft-injured, but red-hot when he's healthy Jeff Keppinger to the Giants for a pair of young minor league pitchers. This was a win-win. San Fran needed a bat, Houston needs arms for the future.
The 2011 season was a disaster before it began. The Astros had an owner who had no interest in owning the team, so he refused to spend any money. When he finally got around to selling it, it was too late for the new owner to do anything about it. To quote the Red Sox fans I grew up with in New England, "Wait 'til next year"!
