I visited the Cowboys new corral, the Jack Doland Fieldhouse the other day, and I have to say, money well spent.
It's not fashionable to spend money on "frivolous luxuries" like sports facilities in a down economy, where schools like McNeese State are being forced to cut classes and faculty. However, that being said, it's been a long time coming. A lot has changed in college athletics since the Pokes opened up their old fieldhouse in 1965. Without an updated facility, the Cowboys would eventually begin to lose the recruiting wars to up and coming programs like Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston and Lamar. The state of the art weight room, sumptuous locker room and training room has impressed even the Division One transfers on the Cowboy roster.
Besides, it is an upgrade to Cowboy Stadium. As quaint as "the Hole" is, my first impressions were that it was antiquated. It's amazing what the Doland Fieldhouse does to change the look of the stadium. The views from the luxury box is incredible. It's a whole new experience.
The bottom line is that the new fieldhouse has brought the Cowboys athletic program into the 21st century and put it on solid footing to compete for years to come!
