Last week, the Saints lost not only the season opener to the Packers, in a game no one should hang their heads about, but also #1 wide receiver Marques Colston. Colston suffered a broken collarbone, putting him on the sidelines for at least the next 4 weeks.
While the team still has talented receivers in Devery Henderson and Robert Mecham, not to mention second year tight end Jimmy Graham, there was a slight frenzy as to who the Saints would go after in the free agency market. Some thought the "retired" Randy Moss would be the answer, other Terrell Owens, despite still rehabbing from knee surgery.
The frenzy reached it's zenith Saturday when a New Orleans tv station reported that their sources spotted Moss at the team's facilities in Metarie. WWL-TV ran the story and almost immediately got their comeuppance. Saints' top brass vehemently denied the story, as did Moss' agent. Moss had already said earlier in the week the only team he would come out of retirement for would be his old team the New England Patriots.
Head Coach Sean Payton put an end to this nonsense by stating on Monday that the Saints would not be pursuing any wide receivers, and that the team was sticking with what they have.
Who's fault is it? Was it WWL who ran the story on "sources". Was it the Saints for not getting ahead of the story? Or is it the 24 hour news cycle, quickly becoming the 24 second news cycle, which demands information at break neck speed without time to digest and verify.
