Severe Thunderstorm Watch Until 5 pm Tuesday

A severe thunderstorm watch has been posted for all parishes in central and south Louisiana. A severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorm development. Some of the storms could contain damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes.

The watch is in effect until 5:00 pm Tuesday afternoon.

Cold Front; Possibily Severe

A cold front is heading our way today. Showers and thunderstorms have already moved through Shreveport and the line is moving southeast. The storms should be near Alexandria with the next few hours. Some of the storms could reach severe levels as they have done so already earlier this morning in northeast Texas and Shreveport. All of this activity is moving southeast and we can expect it here in SLWA afternoon. A few smaller showers could pop up before then. 

The front quickly moves out tonight and sun returns briefly Wednesday before another system affects us Thursday. Yet another risk for severe weather exists Thursday although most of the strong weather looks to stay north.

Threat Fading Quickly

As the strong storms continue to move off to our east, the threat for severe weather is finally ending from west to east across SWLA.  The storms that ripped through portions of our area, most notably eastern Beauregard Parish and Allen Parish dumped some massive hailstones, in excess of 3" in diameter.  These storms contained some strong winds as well as heavy downpours and frequent lightning.  Thank you all for sending in your reports to us at KPLC-TV.  We appreciate the reports because they help us and the National Weather Service in Lake Charles verify the warnings.  If you have any additional photos, log onto www.kplcviewernet.com to upload them to the website or check out what's there already.  Also, you can send additional reports to news@kplctv.com.  If you'd like to check out all the storm reports, log onto the NWS website below and click on the link at the top of the page for today's date.

Severe Storms Packing a Punch

Two severe storms are currently moving through the area right now.  The most notable is moving through Allen Parish currently and has had a history of large, damaging hail, nearing 3" from caller reports.  This storm contains frequent lightning and heavy rainfall.  The second storm is working its way through Calcasieu Parish at this time.  this storm also has a history of some large hail.  Expect the storms to continue to push out of the area as we go through the next couple of hours.  The storms are roughly moving east at a rate of about 35mph.  Stay tuned to KPLC-TV for the very latest updates.

Under the Gun

Large damaging supercell thunderstorms have already moved through northern portions of our viewing area, such as in Vernon parish.  The cold front continues to march across Texas at this time providing for the lift in this very unstable environment.  We have plenty of moisture in place, the atmosphere remains very unstable, and the upper level support is in place.  Expect the strong to severe large thunderstorms to develop and intensify as the continue to progress east over the next several hours.  Do stay tuned to KPLC-TV for the latest on the severe weather.

Third and Final Round...

TORNADO WATCH IN EFFECT FOR SWLA AND ACADIANA UNTIL 9:00PM, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF CAMERON AND VERMILION PARISHES.

Severe storms are knocking on our doorstep here in SWLA as of the two o'clock hour Friday afternoon.  After round one on Wednesday and round two on Thursday, this final round is anticipated to push through the area through the afternoon and evening hours tonight.  Expect scattered thunderstorms to develop from west to east through the next few hours.  Strong winds and hail will be expected with any of these storms.  A tornado is a real possibility in any of these rapidly developing thunderstorms.  Cameron and Vermilion parishes are not out to the realm of strong to severe storms developing, as conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes in and around the tornado watch box.  Stay tuned to KPLC-TV for the most up to date information and to see if a warning is issued for your area.  remember, a warning of any type means that severe weather is either occurring or imminent and you could be in grave danger.  Now is the time to have your preparations ready and your action plan ready to activate.  The best place to be during a tornado is the lowest, most central point of a sturdy building away from doors and windows.

Round Three...

One more round of storms is expected today before a nice weekend.

A strong cold front is heading our way and storms are developing. As of Friday late in the morning, the front is in central Texas and storms are just getting fired up. With plenty of moisture and high upper level winds the threat for severe weather is certainly there. Expect thunderstorms to start passing through late this afternoon and into the evening hours. The biggest threats are damagin winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

 

We will be monitoring this system very closely through the day. Watches will likely be posted soon. Stay tuned.

Severe Weather Threat About Over...

Well some good news to report in that the worst of the severe weather is over for tonight. Thankfully tonight the severe weather was not as widespread as it was on Wednesday night. Still there were a few tornado warnings issued and some reports of damage. Unfortunately another round of severe storms seems likely for Friday afternoon or evening. But after that the weekend looks good with cooler temperatures around; in fact we may see some 30’s in the coldest areas on Sunday morning. Storm pressing east....

Thunderstorms continue to press east as of 6:30pm.  There are two clusters of thunderstorms that are most notable.  One cluster is moving through Vernon Parish at this time and another is beginning to move through Calcasieu and Cameron Parishes.  These storms will contain very strong winds, hail (some large hail), frequent lightning, and heavy downpours.  These storms mean business, so take all warning seriously.  Stay tuned to KPLC-TV for the latest severe weather updates.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 6:45pm for portions of Vernon Parish until 6:30pm.  Severe thunderstorms contain strong winds over 58mph, dangerous lightning, heavy rain, and penny sized or larger hail.  Thunderstorms today have a history of large hail. Go indooors and stay inside until at least thirty minutes after the storm passes.  Stay tuned to KPLC-TV for the latest information.
